Israeli activist urges EU to help end occupation

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) >An Israeli human rights activist called on the European Union to challenge Israel over alleged war crimes against Palestinians at a conference held in Vienna on Thursday.

At an event organized by the Vienna-based Association of Women the academic Ofer Neiman accused the EU and its member states of "double-dealing" in its policies on the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory.

He criticized the EU for being silent on what he described as Israel's "long list of crimes" against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and Gaza in contradiction to the EU's own principles on human rights.

Israeli settlements in the West Bank East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights -- lands occupied by Israel in 1967 -- are considered illegal by the international community and a major impediment to peace with Palestinians.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Jan. 26 had urged Israel to freeze its settlement activity in the occupied West Bank calling it an "affront" to the world community.

Neiman was speaking at an event organized as part of Israeli Apartheid Week which was launched in 2005 as an annual series of university lectures and rallies against the Israeli occupation.
