Saudi announces end of 'Northern Thunder' military drill


(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) The historic “Northern Thunder” military drill that saw the participation of more than a dozen Muslim-majority countries came to an end on Thursday the official Saudi Press Agency reported.

The closing ceremony at King Khalid Military City in northern Saudi Arabia was attended by King Salman bin Abdulaziz and senior officials from 11 countries including the presidents of Egypt Sudan and Yemen the emirs of Kuwait and Qatar and the prime minister of Pakistan.

The drill – which involved army navy and air forces – has been described by Saudi Arabia as “the most important and the biggest in the history of the region.”

Forces from Saudi Arabia the United Arab Emirates Jordan Bahrain Senegal Sudan Kuwait the Maldives Morocco Pakistan Chad Tunisia Comoros Islands Djibouti Oman Qatar Malaysia Egypt Mauritania and Mauritius had participated in the event.

SPA said the training “represents a clear message that Saudi Arabia and its brothers and friends of the participating countries stand united to confront all challenges and maintain peace and stability in the region.”
