Kuwait foreign ministry to submit human rights report to Arab League


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KUWAIT March 10 (KUNA) -- The foreign ministry organized on Thursday an ad hoc meeting to discuss Kuwait's first report to the Arab League regarding The Arab Charter on Human Rights attended by government and non-government representatives.The meeting fundamentally dealt with the extent of Kuwait's commitment to all human rights in accordance with articles and clauses of the Charter said legal affairs assistant to the foreign minister ambassador Ghanim Al-Ghanim in a statement to reporters on the sideline of the meeting to which local groups associated with propagating human rights and civil society organizations were invited.The notion of Kuwait preparing a report on its human rights to be submitted to a pan-Arab entity such as the Arab League is a novelty and totally unique on the Arab scene he said though he acknowledged that Kuwait had submitted such reports in the past but to international entities.This Kuwaiti gesture should drive the point home to observers that Arab countries do take seriously the vital issue of human rights he said.He noted that Kuwait has had a stellar record of dealing with human rights which are he averred consecrated in full within the nation's hallowed constitution. Such sacrosanct human values as freedom of speech and the dignified treatment of the individual under the rule of law and equal justice for all are part and parcel of the constitution he said noting these values applied to all citizens and expatriates.Today's meeting is a testimony to the foreign ministry's dedication to get the views of various sectors of society including civil society organizations in the preparation of the report on human rights in Kuwait he said.
