(MENAFN- Morocco World News) In celebration of International Women's Day the High Planning Commission released a study on Tuesday entitled 'Women and Men in Morocco 2016.' The publication describes the extent of gender-based disparities in the kingdom.
According to the findings of the report female breadwinners spend more on their families than their male counterparts do. An analysis of data collected in 2007 shows that female heads of household spend MAD 11801 on their family per year while male heads of household spend MAD 11149. Between 2001 and 2007 female poverty decreased from 9.9 percent to 7.4 percent while male poverty dropped from 16.2 percent to 9.2 percent. The data also shows differences in the age in which women and men get married. While 92.6 percent of men between the ages of 20 to 24 are unmarried only 53 percent of women in the same age group are single. In urban areas 26.4 percent of women were in their first marriage in 2014 compared to 24.9 percent of rural women who were in their first marriage. In addition the figures show that 30.5 percent of urban women are illiterate while 13.7 percent of urban men are in the same position. The literacy statistics are worse in rural areas – 60.4 percent of rural women and 35.2 percent of rural men were illiterate as of 2014. Women are also more likely to be unemployed in urban areas than in rural ones. The female unemployment rate in cities is 29.5 percent but the rate in rural areas is 23.5 percent. The report also includes data on the activities of Moroccan women over the age of 60 years old. In cities 0.5 percent of women over the age of 60 are unemployed 3.6 percent still work 44.3 percent are retired and 40.3 percent are heads of household. Only 0.1 percent of rural women are unemployed 3.1 percent still work while 37.2 percent are heads of household and 0.4 percent are retired.
