The party nominated two of her loyalists Thursday to contest the president’s post: Htin Kyaw a longtime Suu Kyi confidant and Henry Van Hti Yu an ethnic Chin minority and upper house NLD lawmaker.

One of them is certain to win given the NLD’s overwhelming majority in both houses of parliament.

Htin Kyaw 70 a soft-spoken Oxford graduate and writer is likely to be elected as president.

It is unclear when the final vote will take place but a director from the parliament told Reuters it was planned for Monday.

Suu Kyi’s party won a landslide election Nov. 8 but she is barred from becoming president because of a constitutional hurdle.

But Suu Kyi has said in the past she will be the real center of power and run the government from behind the scenes.

Shortly before the parliament was set to begin the process of selecting the new chief executive Suu Kyireleased a letter to her supporters apologizing for not becoming the country's next president andfor 'not fully fulfilling the people's desire.'

She added that she would persevere and asked for people's continued support 'to reach the goal peacefully.”

“I’m very sad. She is the right president. But hopefully one day she will become President. I have 100 percent hope” said Nay Myo Htet an NLD lawmaker immediately after reading the party leader’s letter shown to him by VOA News in the lobby of the Pyithu Hluttaw (lower house of parliament).
