Shaikh Mohammed briefs Joe Biden on UAE's challenges

His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai on Tuesday apprised visiting US Vice-President Joe Biden of the country's great strides towards non-oil economy green and sustainable development and a tolerant society. Receiving Biden and his accompanying delegation at Zaabeel Palace Shaikh Mohammed said the visit by a key US official reflected the strong cooperation between the two friendly countries and peoples at various levels.

Shaikh Mohammed and Biden exchanged views on politics development and security issues as well the ongoing strife in Syria and Iraq and terrorism. During his remarks to Biden Shaikh Mohammed noted that the UAE had worked hard to overcome challenges in its devel-opment process.

"We achieved the aspirations of our people and the vision of the leadership which aimed to achieve sustainable development and enhance tolerance and values of harmony in our culturally diversified society" he said. He spoke of the UAE's growing tourism sector - which he said has become a vital part of the country's increasingly diversified economy.

Although the UAE is an oil-pro-ducing country tourism has be-come a window for cultural rap-prochement between the country and the people and the countries and peoples of the world he said. Shaikh Mohammed spoke about the country's push to im-plement clean energy sources particularly solar power.

"This is one of the big challenges that we seek to overcome with great success to protect the local environment and support our national economy and thus encourage other countries to adopt renewable source to generate electric power."

Shaikh Mohammed praised the global roles played by the US vice-president and his efforts to develop friendly ties and cooperation between his country and the UAE in various fields especially his humanitarian role in addressing the cancer menace inside and outside the UAE.

The meeting which was attended by a host of other important UAE dignitaries and the US ambassador to the UAE ended with an invitation to Biden regarding the US participation in Expo 2020. Biden accepted the invitation and congratulated the UAE leader on winning the bid to host the international event.

Reiterating that Expo 2020 will be in line with international standards Shaikh Mohammed highlighted the world-class infrastructure available in the country especially in the transportation telecommunications maritime and air transport fields.

Biden praised the wise policies of the UAE leadership in all avenues particularly in the country's regional and global relations.

The meeting marked the culmination of Biden's successful trip to the UAE which also saw him meet His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.
