German foreign minister on official visit from Monday

Dr Frank-Walter Steinmeier Germany's Foreign Minister will be in Oman on Monday and Tuesday as part of his Gulf visit the German Embassy has confirmed.

An embassy official said he will be meeting H E Yousuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah Oman's Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs and other high-ranking officials. The meeting will discuss bilateral ties. The talks are also likely to focus on a peaceful solution to the conflicts in Syria Libya and Yemen.

After the Gulf tour Dr Steinmeier is set to meet UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in Bonn reports say.

H E Alawi was in Germany in February as part of Oman's participation in the International Syria Support Group. He had also visited Germany in August 2015. Political consultations between the two countries were held in May 2014.

Norbert Lammert president of the Bundestag (German parliament) visited Oman in 2013 while vice president Claudi Roth visited in 2014. Oman and Germany share a strong economic relationship through the Joint Economic Commission which has met for 38 years.

Sayyid Badr bin Hamad al Busaidi secretary general in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs led Oman's representation at the commission's 13th meeting in Berlin in 2014. The next meeting is scheduled for this year in Oman. In 2012 a group of 70 German investors from the Middle East Best Select Fund visited Oman.

German companies have been investing in zones such as the Port of Sohar.
