As US Vice-President Joe Biden arrives in the UAE for a brief visit issues related to regional security take the centre stage of talks between the two countries.

The visit is considered both historic and crucial as the US Vice-President arrives while the region is keen to address mounting security challenges and at a time when America is about to choose its next government.

Biden's visit is the second of a top US official to the UAE after a visit by former president George Bush in 2008 during his last tour of the region before leaving the White House.

Also Biden's arrival comes at a time that the US and the UAE are increasingly cooperating to face regional challenges particularly with regards to counter-terrorism and the fight against extremist groups.

In his visit to Abu Dhabi and Dubai the two country's commitments to promoting peace in the Arabian Gulf joint counter-terrorism issues and deterring threats to regional stability as well as nuclear proliferation joint trade and ways in which the US can cooperate with the UAE's space programme are expected to come for discussion.

"The visit of Vice-President Biden is a very important milestone in the US-UAE relationship. The visit will highlight the strength of our bilateral relationship with one of our closest regional partners" said Barbara Leaf US Ambassador to the UAE.

The partnership between the two countries has become stronger than ever in recent years with notable growth in bilateral trade economic cooperation and cultural partnerships.

Biden's visit follows two visits to the US by His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces most recently in May 2015. The most recent visit by Shaikh Mohammed offered the UAE an opportunity to exchange views with the US on a number of important regional developments such as the fight against Daesh the situation in Yemen and developments in Libya and Syria.

"The United Arab Emirates led by the President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan attaches great importance to strengthening mutual cooperation with the United States in various fields so as to achieve the aspirations of the leaders of the two countries and their peoples in accordance with the solid foundations of mutual respect trust and common interests" he said at the time. He also called the US "a key strategic partner for the GCC and has a vital role in maintaining security and stability in the region given its global weight central role and mutual interests between the two sides as well as joint cooperation and close partnership."
