Austria jails Bulgarian for smuggling migrants


(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) An Austrian court has sentenced a Bulgarian national to five years in prison for people smuggling The Associated Press reported on Wednesday.

The court in Linz found the 41-year-old Bulgarian man guilty of people smuggling after police discovered 20 migrants packed in the back of his refrigeration truck when they stopped the vehicle in August 2015. The name of the man was not released.

Police said they had found the 20 migrants from Syria Iran and Afghanistan sharing a space of just seven square meters in the back of the truck. Police had stopped the truck after a chase.

Austria has taken an increasingly tough line on migrants in recent weeks imposing a daily cap on the numbers of people it is willing to allow in and encouraging Balkans states to do the same.

The moves that have angered neighbouring Germany which opposes EU member states taking unilateral action to curb migrant flow.

In a separate case four Bulgarian nationals were arrested in Hungary last year over suspected involvement in the smuggling of 71 migrants whose dead bodies were found in an abandoned truck in Austria at the end of August.
