Anti NATO protesters demand referendum in Serbia

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Two right-wing organisations Zavetnici (Oath Keepers) and the Patriotic Movement of Serbia led by retired police general Bratislav Dikic held an anti-NATO rally in King Milan Square in Nis on Friday demanding a national referendum on NATO membership.

Some of the protesters carried a banner with the slogan "Resistance to the occupation".

The trigger for the protest was Serbia’s recently adopted agreement to cooperate with NATO’s Support and Procurement Organization NSPO.

The agreement’s opponents claim it endangers the sovereignty of Serbia and represents a step closer to membership of the alliance which bombed the country in 1999.

Milica Djurdjevic the leader of Zavetnici told BIRN before the rally that cooperating with the NSPO is disrespectful to the Serbian people and particularly to war veterans because of the NATO bombing.

“This agreement endangers Serbian sovereignty and we are demanding a referendum on NATO membership” Djurdjevic said promising that several war veterans’ organizations would also participate in the protest.

Zavetnici and extreme nationalist movement Obraz organized an anti-NATO rally in Belgrade on January 20 when several thousand people protested in front of the Serbian Presidency building over the ratification of the agreement with the NSPO.

The protesters carried Serbian flags photographs of Vladimir Putin and anti-NATO banners shouted “Kosovo is Serbia” and sang patriotic songs.
