Cruz, Trump, Clinton, Sanders make gains on Super Saturday

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON March 6 (KUNA) -- There was no runaway winner on "Super Saturday" where voters in five US states selected which candidate should represent their party in the November presidential election.Democratic Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton won the Louisiana primary but did not maintain hold of Nebraska and Kansas where rival democratic socialist Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders won.Clinton still holds a strong lead in the delegate count that is important to gaining the final party nomination for president despite Sanders's two state wins.Republican Texas Senator Ted Cruz won the Kansas and Maine caucuses but failed to sustain votes in Louisiana and Kentucky where real estate mogul Donald Trump won. Cruz will need to maintain momentum in the coming weeks in order to overcome the 83 delegates Trump is in the lead with.Early on Saturday Cruz won the Conservative Political Action Conference's presidential straw poll boosting his claim to be the leading conservative in the race. The conference's poll has been known to attract younger conservative voters while also gauging the feelings of the conservative movement. The biggest disappointment for the day would have been for supporters of Florida Senator Marco Rubio who so far only won one state that was Minnesota."Personally I'd call for him to drop out of the race...i don't think tonight he can rant and rave" said Trump to his supporters after the results came in.Ohio Governor John Kasich who is last in the total delegate count has stated hope in gaining the support from Republicans in northern states which are geographically closer to his home base.On Sunday Democrats in Maine will hold a caucus and Republicans in the US territory of Puerto Rico will hold a primary. In July state delegates from both parties will go to their respective conventions and name the candidate who will face off for the presidency in November. (end) ak.rk
