Qatar- DI selects 24 winning teams

DOHA: Destination Imagination (DI) Qatar 2016 Tournament has selected 24 winning teams out of 315 from 100 schools in Qatar.

The winning teams will participate in the DI Global finals from May 25 to 29 in Knoxville Tennessee US.

Hosted by AlFaisal Without Borders (ALF) Foundation the four-day competition was held in partnership with the Ministry of Education at Qatar National Convention Centre and was supported by Social Media Solutions Qatar Volunteers Amlak and QNCC.

The foundation brought the DI programme to Qatar to address the growing need for students to exhibit curiosity and self-direction in learning. It also aspires to meet the needs of universities for students prepared to continue to grow the region with an attitude of innovation and problem-solving. The programme also aims to provide employers with graduates empowered as decisionmakers and thought leaders.

A highlight of the competition among Independent schools was the participation of Al Yarmouk Independent Preparatory School which entered the tournament with a team of visually impaired students.

The achievement had a huge impact on about 2200 participants as the winning team from the school also imparted the lesson of showing respect for others and accepting others’ differences which are among the basic values of the Foundation.

The team’s character also made them role models for the real meaning of challenge persistence commitment patience and creativity towards successful attainment of desired goals.

Sheikh Faisal bin Qassim Al Thani Chairman Board of Trustees ALF honoured the team and the school’s Headmaster Ibrahim Mubarak Al Edan with a special award.

“ALF through our DI programme aims to develop the future leaders of Qatar” said Sheikh Faisal. “In pursuing the nation’s growth and development aspirations as contained in Qatar National Vision 2030 we need new ideas from young creative and innovative minds of students handicapped or not who will form part of a rich national pool of thinkers and movers that will push the country forward in all fields.

“I wish to congratulate all winners for their outstanding and impressive performance” he added.

Three teams from Saudi Arabia two each from Morocco Poland Turkey and the US and one each from the UAE and Jordan took part in the 24-hour Extreme Challenge.

The teams from Poland and Minnesota tied for first place. Another team from Poland grabbed second place and a team from Saudi Arabia got third.
