France S. Arabia underscore support for Syria's moderate opposition


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) PARIS March 4 (KUNA) -- The visiting Saudi Foreign Minister Adel-Al-Jubeir and his French counterpart Jean-Marc Ayrault held talks on Friday on a host of Middle Eastern files namely Syria with the two sides noting their joint approach to back up the "moderate opposition" camp.Emerging from the meeting Al-Jubeir said he held constructive and fruitful talks with his French counterpart on various issues namely the Syrian file and means of reaching viable peace in the troubled nation; noting that Riyadh believes such an objective is attainable through backing "the moderate opposition" groups in Syria.The discussions also covered Yemen Lebanon and the stalled Middle East peace process Al-Jubeir added.Lebanon has been gripped with diverse crises such as vacancy of the presidential post Yemen with infighting while the peace process has been deadlocked for a long period of time.For his part Ayrault said the discussions dealt with bilateral ties coordination between the two countries on various questions hinting that much of the talks focused on the situation in Syria affirming the joint approach to pave way for sustainable peace in the country.He underlined current efforts to maintain the cease-fire deliver aid to civilians and push forward the political process through backing the "moderate opposition" parties and organizations.Syria is currently witnessing a shaky truce brokered by super powers that have exempted "the terrorist organizations" the so-called Islamic State and Al-Qaeda affiliate Al-Nusra Front. These groups' strongholds are being targeted by coalition warplanes almost on daily basis.The foreign ministers' talks were held as part of a current visit to the nation by Saudi Crown Prince Deputy Premier and Interior Mohammad bin Nayef bin Abdulaziz who had held talks with French President Francois Hollande and senior French officials earlier. Hollande underscored the depth of French-Saudi relations and the importance of effective cooperation between the two countries in resolving Mideast crises and fighting terrorism.The French president who speaking during his reception of Prince Mohammad noted that the strong relations between the two countries have been instrumental in cementing joint anti-terror efforts. The French President and the Saudi Crown Prince discussed the latest developments in the Middle East.Following the talks the French President granted the Saudi Crown Prince the National Order of the Legion of Honor - the highest national award in France - due to his great efforts in the region and world for combating extremism and terrorism.Separately Crown Prince Mohammad bin Nayef mulled with the French Prime Minister Manuel Valls French Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development Marc Ayrault and Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve the rapid developments in the Middle East particularly in Syria Iran and Yemen.
