Kosovo Party Mulls Taking Thaci Election to Court

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) A Kosovo opposition party is considering taking last week's election of a new head of state to the Constitutional Court.

Parliament voted in Hashim Thaçi as Kosovo's new President last Friday in a tense atmosphere as opposition MPs let off tear gas in the chamber and while street protests erupted in the main square of Pristina.

Ahmet Isufi vice-chair for the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo AAK told BIRN on Thursday that a decision on whether to take the case to the court will be made on Friday.

“Opposition expert groups are working on this issue. We expect to have a final decision on Friday” Isufi said.

Prime Minister Isa Mustafa showed no concerns on Wednesday when he was probed about the possible opposition initiative.

“They can ask the Constitutional Court. I was present that day [for the election] and I observed a perfectly constitutional process with the required number of deputies as is demanded by the constitution and our very transparent democracy” Mustafa said.

The election of Thaçi as President of Kosovo means that the government will meanwhile have to undergo a reshuffle.

His departure from government left two positions vacant as Thaçi was Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister.

Several options have emerged as to how the government will look like after its reshuffle but Basri Musmurati Secretary General of the ruling Democratic Party of Kosovo PDK said nothing had been agreed as yet.

“Maybe we will deal with this issue during next week. We have not discussed vacant positions yet” Musmurati told BIRN.

Yesterday’s government meeting was the first without Thaçi’s presence. Deputy Prime Minister Branimir Sojanovic a Kosovo Serb took Thaçi’s usual chair at the right side of Prime Minister Mustafa.

Thaçi’s departure to the Presidency according to Kosovo analyst Nexhmedin Spahiu will provide him with new ways to continue his grip on state institutions.

“Even outside the government Thaçi will remain present in the government’s life because with such a political background he cannot be easily retired” Spahiu told BIRN.

“In this [presidential] position for example Thaçi will have intelligence reports in his hands and he will know how to use them” Spahiu said.
