UAE- Omafen drug withdrawn after aluminum bits found

The Ministry of Health and Prevention on Thursday ordered the withdrawal of three batches of Omafen drug from the UAE markets after bits of aluminum were found.

The action was taken after the ministry was alerted by the Directorate General of Pharmaceuticals and Drugs Affairs in the Sultanate of Oman said Dr Amin Hussein Al Amiri Assistant Undersecretary at the Ministry for Public Health and Licences. He is also chairman of the Higher Committee for Medical Vigilance in the UAE.

Omafen that has the active ingredient ibuprofen relieves pain and reduces temperature.

An administrative circular calls for removal of three batches (0514005; 0513011 and 051006) of the drug Omafen 400mg tab manufactured by the National Pharmaceutical Industries company in Oman.

"We draw attention of the public that the Omani health ministry has stopped distribution of some batches of the drug that shall be sent back to the dealer as they were found to have been physically non-compliant and contained small pieces of aluminum in the tablets" said Dr Amiri.

The medicine is registered in the UAE in the form of tablets and syrup.

"Other batches of the same drug are safe to use. Also there are a number of substitutes for the medicine" he said.
