After success of the 2015 contest there has been greater participation and enthusiasm from schools and colleges with each striving to do better than the other said the campaign manager at Muscat Daily. Muscat Daily's paper recycling campaign the first in the country went innovative last year with the launch of the Recycle Mania Tournament for educational institutions.

Indian School Sohar (ISS) which collected 11405kg paper was winner of the 2015 tournament and Nizwa College of Technology (NCT) and Sur College of Applied Sciences took the second and third spots with 5920kg and 3306kg respectively. The 11-week 2016 competition began on February 2 and will continue till April 18.

'The kind of participation we are seeing this year is unprecedented. From 15 participants last year we have 26 this year. ISWK is leading by example as they have been contributing on a daily basis' said the campaign manager at Muscat Daily. Seema Pereira supervisor for primary wing ISWK said that the competition has just begun. 'Everyday our children bring in paper for recycling and primary section is contributing the most. Even our kindergarten section has been regularly participating. What is best is that the children have understood the concept of recycling and they are actively involved in it' she said.

'We are happy that parents are also playing an active role in this campaign' she added. ISWK was not part of 2015 competition but Seema said that the school has been involved with recycling campaigns in the past. Like ISWK CCE also couldn't take part in the competition last year but wants to make amends by giving strong competition to other institutions in fray this year.

Dr Ahmed Hassan al Balushi dean CCE said that his college takes various environmental initiatives under its Environmental Protection and Energy Conservation Centre. 'Our students and faculty regularly take part in recycling plantation beach clean-ups and several workshops held as part of environment protection. So when we heard about the recycling mania we wanted to grasp the opportunity and participate in this novel endeavour.'

He added that wastepaper collection booths have been installed in the college just for this competition and students are encouraged to participate actively. Each participating institution has been given a special login and password to access the Mania section on the Muscat Daily website so that they can chart their progress.
