(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Ramallah March 1 (Petra) --Israeli occupation forces killed a young Palestinian and injured 15 others during violent confrontations with residents of the Qalandia refugee camp in the Occupied West Bank.
Qalandia Media Center said in a statement that hundreds of Israeli soldiers backed by military helicopters raided Qalandia camp located 10 kilometers north of Jerusalem and clashed with Palestinian youths.
A 22-year- old Palestinian young man identified as Iyad Omar Sajdiyah was killed by an Israeli soldier sniper during the confrontations. Sajdiyah was a student at the Faculty of Media in al-Quds University.
Around 1300-1500 Israeli soldiers raided the camp late Tuesday backed by dozens of military vehicles bulldozers and Apache helicopter and clashed with Palestinian youths the statement said.
Fierce clashes between Israeli troops and local citizens continued until Wednesday dawn during which the soldiers used intensive live munitions and tear gas canister. At least 15 Palestinians were injured during the confrontations.
Israeli forces claimed they were searching for two undercover soldiers who lost their way after they have entered the camp by mistake.
According to the Israeli army Palestinian youths attacked an Israeli military jeep after discovering two undercover soldiers inside it. The military vehicle was set ablaze after rocks and military cocktails were thrown at it while the two soldiers escaped by foot to a nearby cemetery before Israeli occupation forces came and rescued them.
Israeli army spokesperson confirmed that five soldiers were injured during the clashes and were transferred to the hospital.
Following the clashes Israeli occupation forces imposed a tight military cordon around the camp while military ambulances were seen transferring wounded soldiers to a nearby hospital.
S Kh The violence escalated after an hours-long gun battle erupted between some residents of the camp and the Israeli forces who fired tear gas canisters and used live munitions against Palestinians homes.
