India allocates USD12.7b to revive farming sector


(MENAFN) Amid the current struggle facing farmers nationwide, India is showing a budget targeted mainly at raising farm growth and appealing to the rural poor.

The government has assigned USD12.7 billion for rural development as a whole; hence it plans to double the income of stressed farmers in the next 5 years.

In particular, there are extensive preparations to set up 89 schemes for irrigation, doubling investments in rural roads to help farmers get produce to market.

The country has pledged to achieve its goal of slashing the fiscal deficit to 3.5 percent of gross domestic product for 2016-17 from 3.9 percent the year before.
