Tunis to open Libya embassy after formation of unity gov't

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) >Tunisia will reopen its embassy in Libya once that country’s national unity government is officially unveiled Tunisian Foreign MinisterKhemaies Jhinaoui said Monday.

"Tunisia will be among the first countries to open its embassy and consulate in Libya once a new government is unveiled" Jhinaoui told parliament.

Tunisia closed its diplomatic missions in Libya in 2014 and 2015 after a number of Tunisian diplomats in the war-torn North African country were kidnapped by militants.

Libya has remained in a state of turmoil since 2011 when a bloody rebellion ended with the ouster and death of longtime strongman Muammar Gaddafi.

Since then the country’s stark political divisions have yielded two rival seats of government one in Tobruk and one in capital Tripoli each of which has its own military capacity and legislative assembly.

Last week theTobruk-based assembly postponed a scheduled confidence vote on a proposed cabinet lineup for a UN-backed unity government.

In JanuarytheTobruk-based assembly rejected a first cabinet lineup proposed by Fayez al-Sarraj the unity government’s prime minister-designate and a former member ofthe Tripoli-based parliament.
