Nabil al Arabi announces decision not to seek second term

CAIRO 29th February 2016 (WAM) -- Dr. Nabil al-Arabi Secretary-General of the Arab League has said that he would not seek a second term as Secretary-General of the pan-Arab body after his present term ends in July 2016.

The Middle East News Agency MENA quoted Mr. al-Arabi in a statement on Sunday as saying that his tenure as Secretary-General Of the Arab League will end on 1st July. "I have asked the Egyptian government not to think about renewing my mandate" al-Arabi told reporters at the League's headquarters in Cairo.

Traditionally the Secretary-General of Arab League has held the post for two terms and Cairo has always insisted that it be held by an Egyptian diplomat.
