Reformists sweep Iran polls initial results indicate

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Allies of Iran’s reform-minded president Hassan Rouhani appear to have swept parliamentary polls according to preliminary results.

A pro-Rouhani alliance of reformists clinched 29 out of 30 seats up for grabs in capital Tehran initial results indicated on Sunday.

Prominent conservative candidate Gholamali Haddad-Adel meanwhile trailed at 31st place.

Initial results from Tehran also suggested that Rouhani and moderate candidate Akbar Rashemi Rafsanjani were leading the race for seats in Iran’s influential Assembly of Experts.

The 88-member assembly is responsible for appointing Iran's supreme leader.

Official election results are expected to be announced Monday.

Millions of Iranians voted on Friday to elect members of the country’s 290-seat parliament and Assembly of Experts.

It was the Islamic Republic’s first such election since it signed a historic nuclear deal last July with world powers.
