ABU DHABI 28th February 2016 (WAM) -- In line with Abu Dhabi Vision 2030 and in support of its efforts to fulfil its commitment towards mitigation of climate change and adaptation to its impact in the Abu Dhabi Emirate the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi EAD organised on Wednesday a workshop to familiarise concerned entities with Greenhouse Gas GHG emissions estimation tools and methods that are in line with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change IPCC guidelines and share with them all significant findings preliminary results and achievements of the second cycle of the GHG inventory.

The one-day workshop was attended by representatives from various government entities at the local and federal level responsible for overseeing the major emitting sectors namely energy industrial processes land-use change and forestry agriculture and waste.

Shaikha Al Hosani EAD's Acting Executive Director for Environment Quality said "This important workshop comes in line with the Abu Dhabi government's vision and plan to mitigate climate change and adapt to its impact by building and updating an inventory for greenhouse gas emissions in the emirate on a regular basis which helps in the development of strategies and policies to monitor evaluate and reduce emissions of different sources and sinks that absorb carbon emissions.

Building and updating the GHG guidelines meets the national and global requirements adopted in climate change agreements most recently the Paris Convention and is part of a comprehensive system for monitoring reporting and verifying of information on climate change based on research and knowledge and the application of standards of transparency and best practices.

Al Hosani said "Updating our GHG inventory enabled us to compile baseline data that will help the government develop strategies and plan to reduce the impact of climate change and reduce carbon emissions in different sectors with the support and participation of all concerned sectors in the emirate."

She noted "Following establishment of the first greenhouse gas inventory across Abu Dhabi Emirate EAD has set a plan for biennial GHG inventories that would enable understanding of the emission trend along with economic development and the various mitigation efforts in the emirate."

"Building on the first inventory which was based on 2010 data the second cycle of the GHG inventory involved updating by using the 2012 year data and assessing future GHG emissions for 2030" she added.

Al Hosani also noted that "Two GHG emission scenarios were developed for the year 2030 - the Business As Usual (BAU) model that assumes future anthropogenic emissions will proceed without additional legislation or control as in the base year and the Extended Emission Control (BAU-EXEC) scenario that considers the improvement in production technologies and the emission control measures in various sectors."

She added "The project was implemented in close collaboration with around 18 relevant entities in the emirate." She also praised the cooperation extended so far by the concerned authorities to support and facilitate the implementation of the project and stressed the need to continue this cooperation to achieve the goals of this project.
