Gajser tops Qatar field in season opener of MXGP

LOSAIL Qatar: Honda rider Tim Gajser last night won both races in the season’s opening round of the MXGP World Championship.

The 19-year-old couldn’t have hoped to make a better start to his MXGP debut on a cool night at Losail International Circuit.

Gajser clocked a time of 34:07.633 to take race 2.

Defending world champion Frenchman Romain Febvre finished in second spot (8.230 seconds behind Gajser) improving on his third-place finish in race 1.

Russian Honda rider Evgeny Bobryshev claimed the third spot in race 2 (9.952 seconds behind Gajser) a drop from his second-place finish earlier in the evening.

Italian racing legend Antonio Cairoli finished fourth fastest some 10.628 seconds behind Gajser’s time.

Belgium’s Jeremy Van Horebreek (Yamaha 11.960 off the pace set by Gajser) completed the top five in race 2. Earlier in race 1 last year’s MX2 world champion Gajser topped the field finishing his 18 laps in a time of 33:56.516.

Bobryshev (07.507 seconds behind) was second while defending world champion Febvre (19.644 seconds behind) ended race 1 in third spot.

Van Horebeek was 23.148 seconds behind Gajser while British rider and Febvre’s Yamaha team-mate Shaun Simpson (27.015 seconds behind) completed the top five in race 1.

Cairoli finished sixth fastest on hi KTM (29.383 seconds behind) in race 1.

Earlier in the evening Jefferey Herlings picked up two wins in as many outings at the dirt track at Losail International Circuit where the Dutchman impressed with his daredevil riding on his KTM bike.

Herlings clocked 34:36.485 to nail race 1 in which French rider Dylan Ferrandis powered to the second spot on his Kawasaki (34:38.612).

The third spot was grabbed by Pauls Jonass (KTM) who finished 36.086 seconds behind Herlings.

Swiss rider Jeremy Seewer (Suzuki) finished fourth (45.698 seconds behind) and Aleksandr Tonkov (Yamaha) was fifth some 45.698 seconds adrift of Herlings.

In race 2 Herlings (34:39.257) finished ahead of Ferrandis (17.253 seconds behind Herlings) and third-placed Jonass (33.722 seconds behind the winner).

Belgium’s Brent Van doninck (35.284 seconds adrift Herlings) and Seewer (36.687 seconds behind) completed the top five riders in race 2.

Herlings leads the MX2 World Championshps with 50 points followed by Ferrandis (44) and Jonass (40). Seewar is fourth on the points table with a tally of 34 while Van doninck is fifth (31).The Peninsula
