DOHA: Qatar marked its annual environment day yesterday under the theme ‘No to plastic bags’.

Minister of Municipality and Environment

H E Mohamed bin Abdullah Al Rumaihi joined school students and senior officials from the ministry in activities to mark the day at the erstwhile Qatar Green Building Park on the outskirts of Doha.

Speaking on the occasion he said Qatar had gone a long way in preserving the environment and now citizens and expatriates are aware of its importance.

Children took part in workshops on recycling plastic and paper and painting and drawing on environment related topics among others.

In a statement the ministry said plastic bags have become part of our daily life and are the most dangerous industrial materials that do great harm to the lives of human beings and other creatures on earth.

“Every day we are seeing different types of plastic. We don’t know the danger it poses to our health and the environment. Plastic is made from petroleum products and other chemical substances. It needs hundreds of years for them to dissolve in nature and eventually affects our health and the environment” said the ministry.
