UAE- Sharjah book fair hopes to raise Dh1m for special needs kids

The ongoing Sharjah Used-Book Fair (SBUF) is proving to be popular among residents here with students saying they wait for the fair to buy theiR favourite books.

Osama Mardini head of the media committee at SCHS said the previous edition of the Sharjah Used-Book Fair (SBUF) generated Dh350000 which SCHS used in supporting children with special needs in various institutions. "This year our target is to raise Dh1000000 and sell books to maximum number of families and students to promote reading. This edition coincides with the declaration by the President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan that 2016 is the year of reading.

Where? When?

SUBF will be open daily from 9am to 10pm until February27. The fair is located at Nakheel Park Buheirah Corniche near Al Noor Mosque.

The fair has 90 stalls selling books on various subjects and prices start from Dh2 to Dh20. There many free books also offered to children and those who cannot afford to pay even the Dh2.

The turnout was great on the first day and around 30000 people are expected to visit in the five days. Mona Abdul Kareem Deputy Director of SCHS said the first day of SBUF witnessed a great turnout. She added that this year SCHS has constructed a paved path in the park for the convenience of people with special needs and the elderly.

Speaking to Khaleej Times Amina Jad wife of Egyptian Ambassador said SUBF values the fact that knowledge should be spread through these book among people. The SCHS has made great efforts in promoting reading through this great idea.

Dana Rafat a student at an Ajman school said she donated 4000 books to SUBF. Maha Khalaf Emad Barakat and Moza Al Shamsim all college students said they bought reference books which normally costs them over Dh100 per book for just Dh5 and Dh20.

They said they wait for this fair to buy books and save money; it doesn't matter if it's used as long as it provides knowledge.

The first day of the fair also witnessed music performance by Egyptian Sohaj band drawing painting workshops and other competitions.
