Oman- Khoula Hospital saves pre term baby

A team of doctors at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Khoula Hospital has saved a baby girl who was born at 23 weeks of gestational age.

She was treated for four and a half months. The baby who weighed only 570g at the time of birth suffered from patent ductus arteriosusan open hole in the heart. She was on respiratory support for 77 days and administered antibiotics for treating infections. At the time of discharge she weighed 2.2kg and her eyes and ears were functioning normally.

Her growth and neurological development will be monitored twice a month until she is two.

The baby girl is one of the twins born to the mother. Her twin's weight was less than 500g at the time of birth and she could not be saved.

Only 10-40 per cent preemies born at 23 weeks survive. Of the ones who survive more than 50 to 60 per cent will either have short or long-term complications in the form of bleeding in the head eye problems fits breathing problems with oxygen dependency and problems with feeding.
