18 remanded in custody in Istanbul police operations


(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) >Eighteen of 339 people who were arrested in last week’s police operations in Istanbul were remanded in custody authorities said on Tuesday.

From Feb. 15-21 Istanbul police conducted a massive operation targeting organized as well as drug-related crimes.

In addition Istanbul police arrested two suspects in anti-forgery operations Tuesday.

One suspect who was identified by police as Iraqi citizen Asmage Mustafa M. 53 was arrested in a park in Istanbul’s Fatih district.

Police seized a fake Iraqi passport and $300 in cash on the suspect.

Authorities also seized 157 fake passports 32 fake ID cards blank driver’s licenses 80 fake stamps and seals used for border crossings as well as boarding passes belonging to airline companies in the suspect’s house.

The suspect faces charges of human smuggling and forgery police said.
