Oman will join nations across the world to mark Earth Hour from 8.30-9.30pm on March 19.

The Environment Society of Oman (ESO) has urged people to switch off all non-essential lights during this hour.

This year's theme highlights the need to tackle climate change and global warming. Addressing a press conference on Sunday Lamees Daar executive director of ESO said 'Our focus is on creating awareness about saving energy. We are celebrating this day with more than 130 countries.

The Royal Opera House Muscat (ROHM) and the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque will be switching off non-essential lights in support of the initiative.' Earth Hour is one of the world's largest voluntary movements in which over 200mn people across the world join hands to support the cause. 'Colleges and universities in Oman have pledged to join the cause. From warming oceans to extinct species and natural disasters global warming is a reality that mankind is facing every day. The world has made history by adopting the landmark COP21 agreement. We must now unite again to preserve the environment for future generations. After all if we do not act who will?'

She added 'ESO has been at the forefront of the fight against climate change in Oman. I would request residents and companies across Oman to switch off non-essential lights on this day and unite with millions around the world to make this year's Earth Hour the biggest yet.'

Lamees said 'So far Oman LNG Sohar Aluminium and Towell Engineering are supporting Earth Hour as sponsors with in-kind support provided by TRACCS Crowne Plaza Muscat Muscat Hills & Country Club and Averda. We are still looking for more sponsors and urge companies who would like to support this campaign to get in touch with us.'

ESO will launch a media campaign on March 1 in the build-up to a special Earth Hour event for families which will be held at Muscat Hills golf course from 4.30pm to 7pm. It will have games live music an e-waste collection corner and a number of other fun activities. 'It will end at 7pm so that families can return home and participate in the Earth Hour campaign' Suaad al Harthi programme director ESO said.
