Egypt top Fazza IPC Powerlifting World Cup in Dubai

Egypt finished on top of the medals table at the end of the Seventh Fazza IPC Powerlifting World Cup - Dubai 2016 after sealing a double on the fifth and final day at the Dubai Club for the Disabled.

Nadia Ali (141kg) and Mohamed Elsayed (227kg) in the women's 86kg-plus category and the men's U107kg classification took Egypt's final tally to 10 gold four silver and two bronze. The other 10 gold medals went to Iran Iraq Jordan Kyrgyzstan Poland Russia and Ukraine.

The Ukrainians had seemed set to finish second at this meeting but Siamand Rahman's new world record lift of 296kg in the very last event - the men's 107kg-plus class - took his country up to three golds to the Europeans' two and thus the silver berth on the podium.

The UAE's Paralympic hero Mohammed Khamis Khalaf who claimed the hosts' only senior medal here with bronze in the men's U88kg event was specially recognised for his contribution to Emirati powerlifting. The Dubai-based artist Fawaz Ayoub painted a portrait of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and the Ruler of Dubai using glue and gold glitter and there was a prize draw for various prizes.

Attending the final session were Mohammed Abdul Karim Julphar vice chairman Dubai Club for the Disabled; Souad Ibrahim Darwish director Championships Hamdan bin Mohammed Heritage Center; Majid Abdullah Al Usaimi executive director Dubai Club for the Disabled and director Fazza Championships for the Disabled; and Jon Amos chairman International Paralympic Committee-Powerlifting.

This event was held under the patronage of Shaikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council (DSC) and organized and supervised by the Dubai Club for the Disabled with the support of strategic partners - Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Center (HHC) and in cooperation with the International Paralympic Committee the General Authority for Youth and Sports Welfare (GAYSW) the DSC and the UAE Paralympic Committee.
