Civilians among dead in S. Sudan UN c gunfight


(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) in Kenya has said that two members from its staff working in South Sudan were among 18 people killed last night in fighting which broke out at a UN base.

“As a result of the fighting that erupted in the Malakal Protection of Civilian (PoC) site in Malakal at least 18 people were killed two of them MSF South Sudanese staff members who were attacked in their homes” a statement from the MSF read Friday.

MSF said during the night it received 36 wounded people among them one MSF staff member: "This attack on civilians is outrageous and we demand that armed groups stop these actions" said Marcus Bachmann coordinator of MSF projects in South Sudan.

On Thursday the UN said that at least five people had been killed after fighting erupted at its base in the northeastern region of South Sudan’s Malakal city.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency on Friday UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) spokesperson Ariane Quentier described the atmosphere in Malakal as calm but tense.

"We as the United Nations are considering putting together a mission into Malakal to see to the needs of the people who might have fled from the compound" Quentier said.

UN peacekeepers are searching for weapons and restricted items.

The UN mission protects just under 48000 civilians in Malakal while nearly 200000 people are currently protected at six other UN mission bases throughout South Sudan according to UNMISS.
