Qatar- ConocoPhillips 'Discover America Week' marks GWSC special tour

DOHA: ConocoPhillips’ Global Water Sustainability Center (GWSC) celebrated the second annual Discover America Week Qatar 2016 by hosting Dana Shell Smith US Ambassador to Qatar for a special tour of its facilities located at Qatar Science & Technology Park (QSTP) in Doha.

As an American company ConocoPhillips’ GWSC was keen to participate in Discover America Week Qatar a week-long initiative held from February 15-22 to mark the US Qatar partnership. Also attended the event was Hamad Al Kuwari Managing Director Qatar Science and Technology Park; a member of Qatar Foundation.

Hamad Al Kuwari said: “We appreciate the visit by the US Ambassador to support ConocoPhillips’ Global Water Sustainability Centre which is not only a resident company of Qatar Science and Technology Park but also a partner in fulfilling QSTP’s mission to be a recognised international hub for applied research innovation and entrepreneurship. We believe that leadership and advancement are acquired through research and awareness-raising and that these are best nurtured at a young age hence our excitement to have

welcomed young students as part of this US Embassy Visit to ConocoPhillips.”

During the visit the delegates toured the labs and the visitor’s center where they met GWSC’s team of scientists and engineers. The team showcased their advanced treatment and analytical capabilities and award winning initiatives. The ConocoPhillips GWSC team were praised on their on-going efforts to address one of the grand challenges facing Qatar which is Water Security as identified by the Qatar National Research Strategy of Qatar Foundation.

The delegation also visited GWSC’s visitor center which works to promote water conservation to students in a unique and compelling way. All water conservation efforts depend on public awareness and an understanding of the critical importance of water for sustainability.

Promoting reductions of water misuse waste and loss are considered to be the most economical and environmentally-protective management tools for meeting water supply challenges today. Since its launch the GWSC visitor’s center has hosted over 5000 students from schools around Qatar. Students from the Omar bin Al Khatab First Primary School participated in today’s event.

ConocoPhillips is at the forefront of leading technology with strong existing capabilities in the areas of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Unconventional reservoirs development Oil Sands and Arctic development; in addition to core legacy assets of conventional resources. Petroleum production and water resource sustainability are extremely important to Qatar and are two areas that are high on ConocoPhillips’ priority list. And for that reason ConocoPhillips set up GWSC the company’s designated world class center of excellence for key water technologies in Qatar.
