Oman- ITA donation portal's 2015 collections surpass half a million rials

Oman's only donations portal raised over half a million rials during 2015 in the process taking the total collections since its launch in 2009 to RO1579564 till February 17 this year.

The portal which facilitates donations to 21 charities and associations collected RO525852 through 19204 donors in 2015 which was close to the 2014 figure of RO547547.

By the end of 2014 theInformation Technology Authority-run (ITA) portal (www.donate.om) had reached a landmark figure of RO1mn in donations since its launch.

Donations touched an all-time high in 2014 and the momentum continued through 2015 taking the total collections of both years to over RO1mn. The rest was collected from 2009 to 2013. Oman Charitable Organization continues to be the biggest beneficiary having received RO770431 till date.

The portal on which collections average around RO30000 per month sees heightened activity during the holy month of Ramadan and in the last couple of years has passed the RO100000-mark regularly.

In 2015 Ramadan the portal raised RO173266 while the highest was in 2014 with a collection of RO290642.

Donation has continued at good pace this year where till Wednesday evening 2220 people had contributed RO53884.

The portal till date has raised more than RO1.5mn through around 63000 donors.

The portal was set up by ITA in cooperation with the Ministry of Social Development in 2009.

The portal's success could be attributed to increased mobile and broadband penetration in the country and the use of social media services. 'The purpose of the portal is to provide an opportunity for citizens and residents to make online donations to a charity of their choice. ...In the past physically visiting a particular charity for donations was a difficult process but with the portal it is just a click away' ITA states in its message to portal visitors.

Among the top five charities to receive the donations till now OCO tops the list with RO770431 from 28253 donors followed by Al Rahma Charity Team with RO362345 from 18381 donors. Dar al Atta'a has raised RO326949 from 11790 donors while Omani Bahjah Orphan Society collected RO36443 from 1040 donors while the Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs - Zakat Division - received RO22843 from 128 donors.

Other recipients include the Oman Cancer Association Al Noor Association for the Blind Oman Association for Disabled Environment Society of Oman Hereditary Blood Disorder Association and the Association for the Welfare of the Handicapped among others.
