Qatar- QU college celebrates Gulf Patients Day

Doha: In recognition of Gulf Patients Day Qatar University College of Medicine hosted a seminar by Abu Al Qassim Madwi Al Shaikh Legal Consultant Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) to highlight issues related to patients’ rights in Qatar.

The forum was part of the college’s Medicine Seminar series that spotlight developments issues and interests in the medical field in Qatar regionally and internationally.

The session was attended by College officials including Dr Egon Toft Dean and Vice-President Medicine and Health; Dr Hossam Hamdi Associate Dean Academic Affairs; students and HMC practitioners.

Al Shaikh discussed the legal aspects of patients’ rights and responsibilities in Gulf.

Questions were raised by students on the legal-medical system in Qatar compared to those in the neighbouring countries and other controversial medical/legal issues such as euthanasia and embryos’ rights.

The session was followed by an exhibition featuring posters on patients’ rights and responsibilities in Qatar to highlight legal areas of medical practice.

The event aimed to enhance students’ knowledge on legal issues in their future profession.

The session also aimed to highlight the relationship between medicine and law as a key component of their medical education towards becoming qualified doctors.

In keeping with the medical/legal theme the college is co-organising a two-day conference ‘Law and Medicine: Changing the future’ on February 28 and 29.

It is being organised in collaboration with College of Law Weill Cornell Medicine Qatar (WCM-Q) and HMC.

The event aims to address legal and medical challenges in Qatar and find efficient solutions to address the fast-developing healthcare sector in the country.The Peninsula
