Morocco- New Project to Develop Moroccan Made Solar Powered Water Heaters

(MENAFN- Morocco World News) Two weeks after King Mohammed VI launched the first phase of the world's largest solar power complex in Ouarzazate a new milestone has been reached this week in Fez with the launching of a project to develop a Moroccan-made solar-powered water heaters.

Sidi Mohammed bin Abdullah University Chairman Omar Assobhei; Director of Fez Technology Graduate School Ali Ben Bassou; Energypoles Company President Jean-Pierre Piedo; General Director of Solar Energy and Power Research Institute Badr Aiken; and General Manager of Energy Investment Company (SIE) Ahmed Baroudi signed the financing agreement for the 'SOL'R SHEMSY' project. The project aims at developing Moroccan-made solar energy powered water heaters.

The project will be jointly supervised by Sidi Mohammed bin Abdullah University Energy Investments Company and Energypoles Company.

The project budget which is estimated at MAD 5958000 is 60 percent financed by the Research Institute for Solar Energy and New Energies (IRESEN).

Ben Bassou told MAP that the 'project primarily aims to produce and market purely Moroccan-made water heaters which rely on solar energy taking into consideration European standards and a suitable cost.''

He also highlighted the capabilities available at Fez Technology Graduate School including both 'human resources and the necessary equipment (workshops and laboratories) to make a model solar-powered water heater.'

The same source added that 'the institution allocated spaces for the required machinery and equipment that will be purchased to serve the project.'

Ben Bassou also revealed that another project related to solar energy is in the works. It aims to study the use of solar energy in refrigeration and the installation of absorption machines in Morocco. The project is funded by the 'Innoprojets' Program at IRESEN at an estimated cost of MAD 3433000.

Fez Technology Graduate School has two laboratories for research and training: one that specializes in the study of refrigeration systems and prototypes of green buildings while the other is dedicated to photovoltaic installations and wind power.

These projects represent a larger movement toward renewable energy investment in Morocco. Recently King Mohammed VI inaugurated Noor Ouarzazate the largest concentrated solar power complex in the world and gave the green light for the construction of Noor II and Noor III.
