Private bodies under be'ah to take over waste collection in Muscat

The task of waste collection across Muscat governorate will soon become the responsibility of private parties working under be'ah a fully government-owned company which has the mandate of solid waste management in the country as per Royal Decree 46/2009.

Qais bin Suleiman al Kashri director of Muscat Municipality's health affairs department said 'Be'ah has floated tenders inviting private parties to carry out the task of garbage collection in the governorate. Be'ah has divided the governorate into two parts.

Part 1 comprises the wilayats of Quriyat Amerat Muttrah and parts of Bausher while Part 2 includes the remaining areas of Bausher and the wilayat of Seeb.'

'These companies are conducting field studies; they are collecting data from different areas to know finer details of the task.'

In the long run the municipality plans to outsource cleaning works to private parties as well. 'We can take a decision only after the task of garbage collection has been completely taken over by be'ah. The reason behind this is to cut costs and improve municipal services.'

He added 'The management of waste collection from underground garbage bins too will fall under be'ah. These were set up in MBD and CBD areas. Now they are coming up in Shatti al Qurm.'
