Doha: The University of Calgary in Qatar (UCQ) celebrated its fourth International Day with students faculty staff and the local community.

The public event was organised by the Student Services Department welcomed over 500 attendees who took part in the festivities through dance performances colourful clothing and delicious food from 22 countries.

“The day exposed members of the UCQ community to perspectives and customs from a larger array of countries. Our students faculty and staff welcomed the opportunity to learn about each other recognising similarities between cultures and finding inspiration not only for future travels but also for areas of nursing research and practice” said Dr Kim Critchley Dean and CEO. “Such exchanges which facilitate creative and critical thinking along with the ability to listen and empathise are integral to our approach to education. Rather than focusing on conveying the relevant knowledge and skills alone we seek to provide a holistic learning experience.”

UCQ hosted Canadian Ambassador to Qatar Adrian Norfolk which indicates the significance the event has attained for UCQ and the wider community. International Day has become a welcome tradition that brings together UCQ community members and visitors encouraging them to learn more about each other share ideas and perspectives and consider approaching their course work and research from different angles.

The diversity found at the day was a characteristic of UCQ at large providing students with a learning environment that prepares them for careers in which they will care for patients from around the globe.

“The event was a great opportunity to learn more about the background of peers I had known and meet students I had not yet come across” said Muna Hassen Alfarhan a UCQ Master’s of Nursing student. “Expertise is crucial for the nursing profession but so is the ability to listen and empathise an ability that events like International Day encourage and facilitate. I will return next year.”

Hend Khalid Al Kubaisi a student in the Bachelor of Nursing Regular Track Programme said: “International Day is a great day to get to know my classmates on another level and it goes to show how diversified the UCQ campus is. There were many engaging activities to observe or take part in and plenty of dishes to savour.”

The day has become a popular component of the UCQ learning experience and an opportunity for the public to witness the diversity found on the university’s campus first-hand. As Qatar works towards realising its development goals such diversity will facilitate innovative thinking that promises to contribute to the advancement of Qatar National Vision 2030 in healthcare and beyond.
