Petrolia spat with Quebec premier risks exploration

(MENAFN- ProactiveInvestors)Canadian energy company Petrolia (CVE:PEA) on Monday demanded that the premier of Quebec respects contracts for oil and gas exploration on Anticosti Island which were authorised by the province. In a meeting with journalists in which the language was at times heated Petrolia's Alexandre Gagnon said Quebec's Philippe Couillard "seems to question" the contract between Petrolia and the Quebec government. Gagnon also accused the premier of Quebec of "seriously compromising the autonomy and independence" of the process of issuing certificates of approval for tests that must take place this summer. Gagnon added that he has applied to the government for drilling permits for the island ahead of the exploratory work at mid-year. "In many of these statements the Prime Minister used words such as" decay devastation destruction "as if we were on the verge of a massive and disorderly exploitation of oil resources at Anticosti" continued Gagnon. "Now it is necessary to put the record straight." Gagnon alleged on Monday that the Quebec government had cut off all communication with Petrolia since December. The Quebec City-based company entered into a limited partnership with the province in 2014 in order to conduct exploratory oil and gas drilling on Anticosti Island located in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Premier Philippe Couillard has recently publicly denounced drilling on the island despite the agreements signed between the government and Petrolia. Gagnon said he wants to meet with Couillard to clarify where the government stands on oil and gas exploration on Anticosti. Petrolia shares closed on Friday down 4.35% at C$0.22. Canadian bourses were closed on Monday on account of a public holiday.
