Turkey- Grenade attacks rock Burundi's capital deaths reported


(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) At least six grenade attacks have hit multiple locations in Burundi's capital Monday morning killing a disputed number of people.

"Six grenades exploded in Bujumbura and a 11-year-old child was killed there" Pierre Nkurikiye Burundian police spokesperson tweeted.

However according to several witnesses spoken to by Anadolu Agency the number of victims could be at least four dead and 20 injured.

The first attack occurred at around 8 a.m. (0600 GMT) in Mukaza municipality in the center of Bujumbura injuring at least 10 people according eyewitnesses.

A second grenade exploded in the same area a few minutes later Christophe Ndikumana a florist in Mukaza municipality told Anadolu Agency.

"I saw four people seriously injured lying on the ground" he added without giving further details.

Another grenade was thrown by unknown assailants in front of Buyenzi Market still in Mukaza municipality. The attack injured two people eyewitnesses told Anadolu Agency.

Two other grenades exploded in Ngagara district north of Bujumbura leaving four dead and at least two injured eyewitnesses said.

Commenting on the attacks Minister of Public Security Alain Guillaume Bunyoni said most of the injured are women and children without giving more details.

Burundi has been in deep political and security crisis since April 2015 when President Pierre Nkurunziza announced his candidacy for a third term.

More than 400 people have been killed and at least 230000 have fled the country to seek refuge in neighboring states within the East African region.
