Kuwait- Hala February cultural activities continue


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KUWAIT Feb 15 (KUNA) -- As part of Hala February cultural activities the national festival in cooperation with Kuwait Writers Association is continuing its series of lectures.The four-day event is themed "Highlights from our National Unity" as the second day witnessed a number of lectures on the role of education and journalism in documenting national unity.The first lecture was by Dr. Abdullah Al-Hajeri History professor at Kuwait University (KU) who talked about Kuwait's role in supporting the educational movement in the Gulf.He noted that the first regulated school in Kuwait was Al Mubarakiyah which opened in 1911 and before that education was religion-based.He added that out of Kuwait's keenness to help its fellow Gulf countries and due to scarce of schools in the Emirates (now the United Arab Emirates) late Amir Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem responded to a call by Sharjah and Fujairah rulers to help spread education there.Meanwhile Dr. Minawer Al-Rajehi of Media department at KU said that Al-Bi'tha (scholarship) magazine was issued in 1946 from Cairo to help establish a bond among Kuwaiti students in Egypt.On his part historian Fahad Al-Abduljalil stressed the role of foreign travelers in documenting the role of Kuwaiti national unity.He said that many of those travelers visited Kuwait in the 18th and 19th centuries and underlined the country's economic and social statuses.Al-Abduljalil noted that British John Beckingham was the first as visited Kuwait in 1816 and described its people of being "courageous and free" as well as having a great harbor.A book fair and a stamps and coins exhibition would be held on the sidelines of the festival.
