Malawi's First Lady Gertrude Mutharika urges people to take care of trees

Lilongwe February 13: First Lady Madame Gertrude Mutharika on Friday appealed to people in the country to plant and take care of trees.
Speaking during a tree planting exercise she conducted for Beautify Malawi (BEAM)Trust at Chitukula Community Day Secondary School in Lilongwe district Mutharika observed that planting trees is one thing and taking care of them is another.
'Planting more trees would be meaningless if we fail to take care of them. We need to make sure that most of the trees that we plant should survive by taking good care of them' she said.
A total of two hundred trees have been planted at Chitukula CDSS by BEAM.
She said her organisation will continue providing tree seedlings to people upon request.
Madame Mutharika said the importance of trees to the environment cannot be over emphasized as they help in soil conservation as play a big role in improving the rainfall pattern among others.
The First Lady also commended people of Chitukula area for their efforts in beautifying their homes and surroundings school premises and other institutions in the area in line with BEAM's objectives.
Apart from planting the trees the organization has also donated books which were sourced from the National Library Service wheel barrows shovels and buckets.
BEAM Trust is also paying school fees for seven students at the school five of whom are girls and has since pledged to drill a borehole to ease up water problems the students and members of the community are facing.
