Egypt- Prisoner dies in failed jail break

(MENAFN- Daily News Egypt) A prisoner, Mohamed Imam, died Saturday in the Al-Hawmdeya Police Station as security forces were trying to regain control of a jailbreak.

The Ministry of Interior said a brawl broke out in the police station between the prisoners, which led the security forces to fire tear gas to stop some prisoners from escaping.

Imam, who was accused of possessing an unlicensed weapon, died in hospital after sustaining injures, the ministry said. Another 17 inmates were injured during the crackdown.

In a separate incident, prisoner Abdel Rahamn Rushdi died Friday night in the Toukh police station. Police said he suffered a mental breakdown, which caused him to act violently within the detention area. The prosecution is yet to investigate the incident.

The police also said that Rushdi was a drug addict, accused of possessing narcotics.
