UAE takes part in 39th meeting Permanent Arab Committee for Human Rights

CAIRO 14th February 2016 (WAM) -- The UAE is participating in the 39th meeting of the Permanent Arab Committee for Human Rights which began today at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the Arab League headed by Oman with the participation of representatives of the member states.

The UAE is represented by Mubarak Al Hammadi Head of the Department of International Organisations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

Mohamed Al Rashidi Head of the Permanent Arab Committee for Human Rights called for supporting the Arab counter-terrorism strategy adopted by the member states and protection of human rights in cooperation and coordination with the Arab League which set mechanisms in this respect.

In his inaugural speech Al Rashidi said "The protection of the rights of the Arab people is deemed a cornerstone in the establishment of a functioning democracy" pointing out that the fulfillment of the international obligations by a member state especially the charters and principles relating to human rights shows the country's adherence to the legal framework that governs its behaviour at both domestic and international levels.

He added that the responsibility to carry out this message does not fall on the shoulders of governments regional and international organisations alone but also on the media civil society bodies and various institutions being key partners in the course of national action.

Al Rashidi noted that the importance of human rights issue has acquired at this juncture especially in the Arab world thus increasing the burden on the Permanent Arab Committee for Human Rights.

He warned of unfolding dangers facing the peoples of the region citing the displacement fear death and destruction posed by terrorist and extremist ideologies that have resulted in crowds of displaced people and refugees. He stressed the need for radical and feasible solutions on the ground.

Al Rashidi stressed the importance of the follow-up project of the Arab Convention on Regulating the Status of Refugees in the Arab Countries in cooperation and coordination with both Arab Councils of the Ministers of Justice and Interior to come up with a comprehensive Arab agreement that represents a protective umbrella for the displaced people and refugees to maintain their dignity.

The five-day long meetings will discuss many important items notably the Israeli violations of human rights in the occupied Arab territories and the status of Arab prisoners and detainees in the Israeli prisons and the detained bodies of Palestinian martyrs.

They will also review the Arab Charter on Human Rights and the Arab Draft Guidance Document Against Torture and Anti-terrorism and the General Secretariat's report on procedures adopted to implement the recommendations of the previous session of the Permanent Arab Committee for Human Rights.
