Moroccan Man Sets Himself on Fire in Protest

(MENAFN- Morocco World News) A Moroccan salesman from the south of the country set himself on fireon Thursday in protest against courts inaction after a complaint he submitted was ignored.

The man who has not been named suffered second degree burns as a result. He was taken to hospital and has been formally detained ahead of questioning which will decide whether or not he should face prosecution.

Reports of local media suggest he committed the act within the office of a public prosecutoron Thursdayin Agadir.

The incident came after he 'filed a complaint against a night watchman who had hit his car but the court took no action pushing him to his extreme protest.'

It is believed the man is still being treated in an Agadir hospital according to local human rights activist Aziz Salami in an interview with AFP.

This isn't the first act of self-immolation Morocco has seen. In fact many believe it has become an all-too-common method for working class people to express their dissatisfaction with their quality of life.

In 2012 an article in the New York Times highlighted the wider rise of self-immolation as a form of protest highlighting the acts of five Moroccan men who set themselves ablaze that year as well as the death of the young Tunisian that sparked the Arab Spring.

In an interview with the BBC in Casablanca one man described the reasoning behind his actions:

“We are highly qualified unemployed people in Morocco' he said “Our protests are legal because we ask for the number of qualified graduates to be given priority for work.”
