Independent to stop press in March to go online only

(MENAFN- ProactiveInvestors)Evgeny Lebedev's ESI Media has announced it is taking The Independent and Independent on Sunday newspapers exclusively online scrapping the print editions. It comes after news yesterday that Johnston Press was in talks over a £24mln deal to buy the 'I' newspaper from Independent Print the vehicle of the Lebedev family. The print editions of the paper will cease in March. Those in the know had suggested such an outcome as soon as the Johnston deal was announced. From March the Independent and IoS will be digital only with the last print editions on the 26 and 20 of the month respectively. ESI acknowledged that there would be some redundancies among editorial employees but also 25 new digital content roles would be created. Lebedev in a letter to Independent employees said the move to take the 'paper' online would preserve the Independent brand whilst allowing the company to continue investments into high quality editorial content.
