Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has announced a reduction in its domestic and international fares in an attempt to stabilise 'unrealistic hikes' caused by the recent strike by its staff back home. Private airlines had raised their fares during the strike.

Confirming the news to Muscat Daily Daniyal Gilani official spokesperson for PIA said 'The airline has reduced its fares on domestic and international flights including Umrah fares with immediate effect to stabilise unrealistic hike in fares and to facilitate its customers.' The fares for Karachi-Islamabad-Karachi and Karachi- Lahore-Karachi will start at Rs7500 (RO28 approx) while return tickets for Umrah passengers from Lahore and Islamabad will begin at Rs54500 (RO200 approx) and Rs44500 (RO164 approx) for passengers from Karachi he added.

Shazad Paracha PIA's country manager said there will be reduction in fares from Oman as well but that will depend on seat occupancy. 'We will see a difference in the lower price segment. The fares depend on the number of people travelling. People in Oman mostly use PIA to travel to Pakistan and we share a little traffic to Bangladesh India etc from the sultanate.'

He said passengers can expect the change in rates by this week. 'I think lower rates will stabilise the conditions that our passengers had faced recently. The strike has been called off after a settlement. We are expecting our first flight to arrive today from Pakistan.' The reduction in fares comes a day after Joint action Committee of PIA employees announced the end of its strike against the proposed privatisation of airline.
