Qatar- 1004 entries received for Katara Festival for Arabic Novel

DOHA: Cultural Village Foundation-Katara has received 1004 entries for the second edition of Katara Festival for Arabic Novel organizers revealed yesterday.

The festival will be held from October 10 to 13 to allow ample time for the jury to carry out its work effectively officials announced at a press conference yesterday at Katara.

Dr. Khalid Al Jaber President Katara Cultural Forum stressed that this edition of Katara Arab Novel Prize is distinguished for the huge number of participants and the diverse range of entries including published and unpublished novels as well as research studies.

This year’s festival has managed to attract novelists and researchers from every country in the Arab World from Oman to Morocco.

A new category has been added to the festival. The additional prize will be awarded to submissions related to research evaluation and novel critique to encourage researchers to advance and refine the historical accuracy of Arabic novels. A total prize money of $75000 will be given to the winners of the new category. The top five unpublished submissions from this category will each be awarded $15000. In addition to the prize money prize committee will offer printing and marketing opportunities for unpublished novels printing and marketing for published novels once translated into other languages and printing and marketing for select studies submitted.

Khalid Abdulrahim Al Sayed General Supervisor of the Prize said the entries comprise 234 novels published last year 732 unpublished novels and 38 research studies adding of the total submissions 277 were by women.

Dr Al Jaber said Katara is continuously collaborating with the Arab League Educational Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) to further strengthen the festival. These efforts stem from the growing significance of the Arabic novel in addition to Katara’s efforts to support Arabic novels and Arab novelists in promoting their work within Qatar the Middle East and beyond.

In particular ALECSO is working closely with the jury of this edition of the festival.

The inaugural edition of the festival has been fruitful as five of the unpublished novels from the festival’s 2015 edition now published whilst a number of published submissions have since been translated into English and French among other languages. The two novels which won the best prize for a novel which will be turned into drama are now in production and on their way to becoming films.
