Morocco- Young Man Who Denounced Corruption Released on Bail


(MENAFN- Morocco World News) Amid the wide national solidarity with Abderhmane El Makraoui the young man who was arrested for denouncing corruption and debunking the fragile infrastructure of a new road the Minister of Justice and Liberties Mustafa Ramid sent an official statement to the Public Prosecutor to release him on bail.

The arrest of El Makraoui caused a wave of indignation among social media users who described it as a form of suppression.

The video of El Makraoui posted on YouTube on January 18th showed him tearing pieces of asphalt to expose the shoddy construction of a new road in the town of El Djema Sahim in the Safi region.

The video spread like wildfire on social media. Many of comments ridiculed the poorly constructed road and affirmed El Makraoui's burning desire to fight against corruption.

The two-minute video provoked social media users who demonstrated their anger and support for El Makraoui under the hashtag #Iam_Abderhmane.

Before his release the Moroccan Centre for Human rights in Safi recently called on all Moroccans residing abroad to stand in solidarity with El Makraoui by organizing sit-ins outside Moroccan embassies around the world.
