National Library of Israel Announces Courses in Moroccan Dialect
(MENAFN- Morocco World News) The National Library of Israel has reportedly announced the opening of Moroccan Dialect courses for Moroccans Jews. The language is still spoken by tens of thousands of Jews in Israel.
The decision comes following the great cultural impact made by the popular Israeli TV series entitled 'Zaguri Imperia' which tells the story of a poor Moroccan family from Beersheba a city in the south of Israel. Jewish viewers have been influenced by the Moroccan family that code switches between Hebrew and Moroccan Arabic Dialect Spanish and French. For many viewers this mix of linguistic codes reflects their ancestors' roots and their cultural background. Head of Public Services Division at The National Library of Israel Orly Simon who initiated the courses said '[It is] [] very important for the students to learn Moroccan dialect as a stepping stone and prerequisite to master Arabic in the future.' 'Zaguri Imperia' has currently become one of the most successful and popular TV shows in Israel. It managed to attract many viewers who feel nostalgic to their ancestors' history.
The series caused a wave of excitement among Moroccan Israeli Jews who have become eager to learn the language spoken by past generations. In the Moroccan Arabic Dialect classes students will study old Moroccan Jewish texts and newspapers which are written in Moroccan Arabic using Hebrew letters rather than the Arabic script or Latin alphabet. Moroccan Arabic Dialect is still spoken by elderly Moroccan Jews who lived in the Kingdom especially when they reminisce about memories of life in Morocco. Edited by Kelsey Fish
