DOHA: Qatar Postal Services Company (Q-Post) yesterday issued a commemorative stamp to mark the fifth National Sport Day (NSD).

With a dimension of 47mm by 31mm the postage stamp bears the NSD logo reminding the people of the importance of celebrating the annual public holiday.

“We issued this commemorative stamp for everyone feel the spirit of National Sport Day and understand its meaning. National Sport Day is a very important event on the calendar which everyone must support” Abdulla Shlash Al Hajri CEO Human Resources and Services at QPost told The Peninsula yesterday.

Each stamp is priced QR5 and 40000 units are available for sale starting today. Some 2000 units of first day covers each of which costs QR6 are also ready. Qatar is one of the few countries which designate a day to celebrate sport and issuing a sport day commemorative stamp is seen as a significant step for further exposure to the celebration internationally.

Q-Post issued a commemorative stamp in 2012 the first year of NSD and honoured the Qatar football team which participated in the first Gulf Cup in Bahrain in 1970.

Al Hajri highlighted Q-Post’s plan to issue NSD commemorative stamps in the future and said Q-Post is organising other activities to celebrate the day. He was speaking at the launch of the stamp yesterday at Arab Postal Stamps Museum at Katara. The museum with over 32000 stamps from all over the Arab world shows how Qatar places a strong impetus on philately.

Said to be the first of its kind in the region the museum permanently houses and exhibits stamps from 22 member states of Arab League.
