Kuwait- Al Naqbi appointed Head of Women's Cmte of Arab Basketball Union


(MENAFN- Arab Times) Nada Al Naqbi, Manager of the Women Sports Department at Sharjah Ladies Club (SLC) has been selected as a member of the Executive Committee and Head of the Women's Committee at the Arab Basketball Union. Al Naqbi was selected during the Arab Basketball Union's two-day meeting at Radisson Blu Hotel in Sharjah being held on the sidelines of the 3rd Arab Women Sports Tournament, Sharjah 2016.

Major General Abdullah Ismail Al Gergawi, President of the Arab Basketball Union said, "We are proud of Al Naqbi who was appointed to this post due to her hard work and dedication in the sports field, and her active role in promoting women's sports. She has vast experience in Arab sports and is Head of the Women's Committee at the Arab Karate Association, and has been instrumental in supporting Arab basketball activities. Her achievements speak for themselves."

He added, "The UAE Basketball Association supports Arab basketball tournaments, especially those held in the UAE. Arab basketball is witnessing an impressive development, and the Arab Basketball Union will support Arab basketball teams which will compete in the Asian and African championships."

Al Gergawi extended his thanks to Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah and Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs, for her support for sports activities, specifically women's sports, as well as for hosting the Arab Women Sports Tournament every two years. He lauded the exceptional success of the tournament that is currently taking place in Sharjah until Feb 12 and its continuous development, as seen in the excellent organisation of the tournament.

Nada Al Naqbi expressed her pride at being selected by the Arab Basketball Union to become a member of the Union's Executive Committee and Head of the Women's Committee at both the UAE Basketball Association and the Arab Basketball Union. She pledged to live up to the trust bestowed upon her, and praised the Union's role in being the first supporter of Arab sports.

Al Naqbi thanked Major General Ismail Al Gergawi and the committee for their trust and choosing her to head the Women's Committee at the Arab Basketball Union-which is a new post, introduced by the union to develop women's basketball.

"This step will reflect positively on women's basketball and bring about significant change in developing the sport. I will work with committees to set plans and strategies aimed at developing basketball tournaments and increasing the number of teams participating in the Arab women basketball tournaments in coordination with relevant bodies. Supporting all forms of sports, with a focus on advancing women's sports, will be given a priority", she said.

The meeting brought together all Arab Basketball Union committees to review suggestions made to set the four-year strategic plan for Arab championships and tournaments.

The meeting also discussed how to attract teams from Arab countries to participate in the upcoming tournaments, as well as the committees' plans and activities up to 2020. The meeting concluded with a host of suggestions, such as scheduling Arab Basketball Union's activities to make sure they do not clash with regional and international tournaments, and reporting on 3 on 3 basketball (Men vs Women) championship due to be held later this year.

Nada Al Naqbi has held several posts in the sports field and has been instrumental in developing women's sports as the Manager of the Women's Sports Department since 2008 and has been serving as the Secretary General of the Sharjah Award for Sports Family since 2012. Since 2009 Nada Al Naqbi has been a member of the UAE Women's Sports Committee, and is Head of the Women's Committee at the Arab Karate Association. Al Naqbi is also a member of the Sharjah Tatweer Forum and was the head of the Public Relations Committee for the Torch of the Asian Games-Doha 2006.

Al Naqbi has also been at the core of organisational roles and contributed to organising the "Gulf States Competitions" as general supervisor of all participating delegations in 2003. She then served as the head of Administrative Coordination Committee in 2005 before she became the tournament deputy manager in 2007. She was also a member of the organising team for the 13th Arab Club Basketball Championship in 2006.

Al Naqbi received several awards and accolades during her career. She received the medal of performance and excellence from HH Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi in 2012, and the Medal of Sharjah's Sports Leaders in 2012. Al Naqbi also received the Sheikha Jawaher Al Qasimi Medal for Excellence during the Silver Jubilee of the Sharjah Ladies Club in 2004. She received the Cultural Distinction Cup Award for the category of Exemplary Club from the General Authority of Youth and Sports Welfare, and the HH Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Award for Women Athletes in 2013.

Nada also received SLC's Distinguished Sports Performance Award in 2010 by Sheikh Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Chairperson of the Sharjah Ladies Club, the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Creative Sports Award in 2009 and the Sharjah Government's Outstanding Employee in March 2005.
